The 2012 contest saw Washington line up behind Obama, delivering 12 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Washington with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Washington was part of his column.

Washington stayed in the Democratic column for the 7th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1988. The region divided — Oregon joined Washington for the Democratic ticket, while Idaho did not. Over its 34 recorded presidential cycles, Washington has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 19 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Barack Obama finished with 332 of the 538 electoral votes to Mitt Romney's 206. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 51.06% of the ballots cast.
