The 2016 contest saw Virginia line up behind Clinton, delivering 13 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Donald Trump (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Virginia among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Virginia backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 2008. The region divided — Maryland and District of Columbia joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia did not.
