Virginia in 2016

The 2016 contest saw Virginia line up behind Clinton, delivering 13 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Donald Trump (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Virginia among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Virginia backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 2008. The region divided — Maryland and District of Columbia joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia did not. Across the 58 presidential elections Virginia has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (33 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Donald Trump took 304 of the 538 electoral votes, against Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
