In 2020, Virginia awarded its 13 electoral votes to Biden of the Democratic party. That placed Virginia with the eventual winner: Joe Biden went on to take the presidency, and Virginia was part of his column.

Virginia stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 2008. The region divided — Maryland and District of Columbia joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, Virginia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 33 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Joe Biden finished with 306 of the 538 electoral votes to Donald Trump's 232. Joe Biden led the national popular vote with 51.31% of the ballots cast.
