Virginia backed Obama (Democratic) in the 2012 presidential election, casting 13 electoral votes for the ticket. Virginia ended up on the winning side — Barack Obama captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Virginia backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 2008. The region divided — Maryland and District of Columbia joined Virginia for the Democratic ticket, while North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia did not. Across the 58 presidential elections Virginia has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (33 times).
