The 2016 contest saw New Jersey line up behind Clinton, delivering 14 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Donald Trump (Republican) won nationally, while New Jersey had backed a different ticket.

New Jersey stayed in the Democratic column for the 7th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1992. The region divided — New York and Delaware joined New Jersey for the Democratic ticket, while Pennsylvania did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New Jersey has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 31 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Donald Trump finished with 304 of the 538 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
