In 1996, New Jersey awarded its 15 electoral votes to Clinton of the Democratic party. That placed New Jersey with the eventual winner: Bill Clinton went on to take the presidency, and New Jersey was part of his column.

New Jersey stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1992. New Jersey did not move alone — neighboring New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware broke the same way in 1996.
