In 2016, Nebraska awarded its 5 electoral votes to Trump of the Republican party. Nebraska ended up on the winning side — Donald Trump captured the White House that year.

It marked the 13th consecutive election in which Nebraska backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1968. The region divided — South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Wyoming joined Nebraska for the Republican ticket, while Colorado did not.
