The 2012 contest saw Nebraska line up behind Romney, delivering 5 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Barack Obama (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Nebraska among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 12th consecutive election in which Nebraska backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1968. The region divided — South Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, and Wyoming joined Nebraska for the Republican ticket, while Iowa and Colorado did not. Across the 40 presidential elections Nebraska has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (31 times).
