Georgia in 2016

The 2016 contest saw Georgia line up behind Trump, delivering 16 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Georgia with the eventual winner: Donald Trump went on to take the presidency, and Georgia was part of his column.

Georgia stayed in the Republican column for the 6th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1996. Georgia did not move alone — neighboring Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina broke the same way in 2016. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Georgia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 34 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Donald Trump finished with 304 of the 538 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
