Georgia backed Romney (Republican) in the 2012 presidential election, casting 16 electoral votes for the ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Barack Obama (Democratic) won nationally, while Georgia had backed a different ticket.

Georgia stayed in the Republican column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1996. The region divided — Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina joined Georgia for the Republican ticket, while Florida did not.
