Delaware backed Clinton (Democratic) in the 2016 presidential election, casting 3 electoral votes for the ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Donald Trump (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Delaware among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 8th consecutive election in which Delaware backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1988. The region divided — Maryland and New Jersey joined Delaware for the Democratic ticket, while Pennsylvania did not. Across the 60 presidential elections Delaware has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times).
