In 2000, Delaware awarded its 3 electoral votes to Gore of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: George W. Bush (Republican) won nationally, while Delaware had backed a different ticket.

Delaware stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1988. Delaware did not move alone — neighboring Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey broke the same way in 2000.
