In 2012, Delaware awarded its 3 electoral votes to Obama of the Democratic party. Delaware ended up on the winning side — Barack Obama captured the White House that year.

It marked the 7th consecutive election in which Delaware backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1988. Delaware did not move alone — neighboring Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey broke the same way in 2012.
