In 1992, Nebraska awarded its 5 electoral votes to Bush of the Republican party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Bill Clinton (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Nebraska among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 7th consecutive election in which Nebraska backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1968. The region divided — South Dakota, Kansas, and Wyoming joined Nebraska for the Republican ticket, while Iowa, Missouri, and Colorado did not.
