North Carolina in 2008

The 2008 contest saw North Carolina line up behind Obama, delivering 15 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed North Carolina with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and North Carolina was part of his column.

The result flipped North Carolina away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 3 cycles. The region divided — Virginia joined North Carolina for the Democratic ticket, while Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Barack Obama finished with 365 of the 538 electoral votes to John McCain's 173. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 52.93% of the ballots cast.
