The 2020 contest saw North Carolina line up behind Trump, delivering 15 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Joe Biden (Democratic) won nationally, while North Carolina had backed a different ticket.

North Carolina stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 2012. The region divided — Tennessee and South Carolina joined North Carolina for the Republican ticket, while Virginia and Georgia did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all.
