North Carolina in 1996

The 1996 contest saw North Carolina line up behind Dole, delivering 14 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Bill Clinton (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving North Carolina among the states he did not carry.

The result flipped North Carolina away from the Democratic it had supported in 1992. The region divided — Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina joined North Carolina for the Republican ticket, while Tennessee did not. Across the 58 presidential elections North Carolina has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (32 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Bill Clinton took 379 of the 538 electoral votes, against Bob Dole's 159. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 49.23% of the ballots cast.
