2024
What happened in North Carolina, 2024
In 2024, North Carolina awarded its 16 electoral votes to Trump of the Republican party. That placed North Carolina with the eventual winner: Donald Trump went on to take the presidency, and North Carolina was part of his column.
North Carolina stayed in the Republican column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 2012. The region divided — Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina joined North Carolina for the Republican ticket, while Virginia did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Donald Trump finished with 312 of the 538 electoral votes to Kamala Harris's 226. Donald Trump led the national popular vote with 49.8% of the ballots cast.
