Massachusetts backed Kerry (Democratic) in the 2004 presidential election, casting 12 electoral votes for the ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — George W. Bush (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Massachusetts among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 6th consecutive election in which Massachusetts backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1984. Massachusetts did not move alone — neighboring Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire broke the same way in 2004. Across the 60 presidential elections Massachusetts has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times).
