1996
Massachusetts in 1996
The 1996 contest saw Massachusetts line up behind Clinton, delivering 12 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Massachusetts with the eventual winner: Bill Clinton went on to take the presidency, and Massachusetts was part of his column.
Massachusetts stayed in the Democratic column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1984. Massachusetts did not move alone — neighboring Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire broke the same way in 1996. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Massachusetts has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Bill Clinton finished with 379 of the 538 electoral votes to Bob Dole's 159. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 49.23% of the ballots cast.
