Massachusetts in 1984

The 1984 contest saw Massachusetts line up behind Mondale, delivering 13 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Ronald Reagan (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Massachusetts among the states he did not carry.

The result flipped Massachusetts away from the Republican it had supported in 1980. It stood apart from its neighbors: Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire went the other way that year. Across the 60 presidential elections Massachusetts has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times). The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.

In the national count, Ronald Reagan took 525 of the 538 electoral votes, against Walter Mondale's 13. Ronald Reagan led the national popular vote with 58.77% of the ballots cast.
