Nebraska in 1964

The 1964 contest saw Nebraska line up behind Johnson, delivering 5 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Nebraska with the eventual winner: Lyndon B. Johnson went on to take the presidency, and Nebraska was part of his column.

The result flipped Nebraska away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 6 cycles. Nebraska did not move alone — neighboring South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming broke the same way in 1964. Over its 40 recorded presidential cycles, Nebraska has backed the Republican party more than any other — 31 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Lyndon B. Johnson finished with 486 of the 538 electoral votes to Barry Goldwater's 52. Lyndon B. Johnson led the national popular vote with 61.05% of the ballots cast.
