In 1956, Nebraska awarded its 6 electoral votes to Eisenhower of the Republican party. Nebraska ended up on the winning side — Dwight D. Eisenhower captured the White House that year.

It marked the 5th consecutive election in which Nebraska backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1940. The region divided — South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming joined Nebraska for the Republican ticket, while Missouri did not.
