1956
What happened in Nebraska, 1956
In 1956, Nebraska awarded its 6 electoral votes to Eisenhower of the Republican party. Nebraska ended up on the winning side — Dwight D. Eisenhower captured the White House that year.
It marked the 5th consecutive election in which Nebraska backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1940. The region divided — South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming joined Nebraska for the Republican ticket, while Missouri did not. Across the 40 presidential elections Nebraska has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (31 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
In the national count, Dwight D. Eisenhower took 457 of the 531 electoral votes, against Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
