Connecticut in 1964

The 1964 contest saw Connecticut line up behind Johnson, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Connecticut with the eventual winner: Lyndon B. Johnson went on to take the presidency, and Connecticut was part of his column.

Connecticut stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1960. Connecticut did not move alone — neighboring New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island broke the same way in 1964. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Connecticut has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Lyndon B. Johnson finished with 486 of the 538 electoral votes to Barry Goldwater's 52. Lyndon B. Johnson led the national popular vote with 61.05% of the ballots cast.
