In 1956, Connecticut awarded its 8 electoral votes to Eisenhower of the Republican party. Connecticut ended up on the winning side — Dwight D. Eisenhower captured the White House that year.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Connecticut backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1948. Connecticut did not move alone — neighboring New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island broke the same way in 1956. Across the 60 presidential elections Connecticut has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (24 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
