In 1960, Indiana awarded its 13 electoral votes to Nixon of the Republican party. The presidency went elsewhere: John F. Kennedy (Democratic) won nationally, while Indiana had backed a different ticket.

Indiana stayed in the Republican column for the 6th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1940. The region divided — Ohio joined Indiana for the Republican ticket, while Illinois, Kentucky, and Michigan did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Indiana has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
