The 1956 contest saw Indiana line up behind Eisenhower, delivering 13 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Indiana ended up on the winning side — Dwight D. Eisenhower captured the White House that year.

It marked the 5th consecutive election in which Indiana backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1940. The region divided — Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan joined Indiana for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky did not. Across the 53 presidential elections Indiana has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (32 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

In the national count, Dwight D. Eisenhower took 457 of the 531 electoral votes, against Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
