In 1972, Indiana awarded its 13 electoral votes to Nixon of the Republican party. Indiana ended up on the winning side — Richard Nixon captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Indiana backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1968. Indiana did not move alone — neighboring Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan broke the same way in 1972.
