In 1948, Indiana awarded its 13 electoral votes to Dewey of the Republican party. The presidency went elsewhere: Harry S. Truman (Democratic) won nationally, while Indiana had backed a different ticket.

Indiana stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1940. The region divided — Michigan joined Indiana for the Republican ticket, while Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Indiana has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Harry S. Truman finished with 303 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
