In 1936, Minnesota awarded its 11 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Democratic party. Minnesota ended up on the winning side — Franklin D. Roosevelt captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Minnesota backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1932. Minnesota did not move alone — neighboring North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin broke the same way in 1936. Across the 43 presidential elections Minnesota has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
