In 1936, Kentucky awarded its 11 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Democratic party. That placed Kentucky with the eventual winner: Franklin D. Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Kentucky was part of his column.

Kentucky stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. Kentucky did not move alone — neighboring Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, and Illinois broke the same way in 1936. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Kentucky has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all.
