Kentucky in 1956
The 1956 contest saw Kentucky line up behind Stevenson, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican) won nationally, while Kentucky had backed a different ticket.
Kentucky stayed in the Democratic column for the 7th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — West Virginia and Missouri joined Kentucky for the Democratic ticket, while Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee, and Illinois did not. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Kentucky has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 457 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
