Kentucky backed Wilson (Democratic) in the 1916 presidential election, casting 13 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Kentucky with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Kentucky was part of his column.

Kentucky stayed in the Democratic column for the 14th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1864. The region divided — Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee, and Missouri joined Kentucky for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia and Illinois did not. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Kentucky has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 277 of the 531 electoral votes to Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
