The 1936 contest saw Arizona line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 3 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Arizona ended up on the winning side — Franklin D. Roosevelt captured the White House that year.

It marked the 7th consecutive election in which Arizona backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1912. Arizona did not move alone — neighboring California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico broke the same way in 1936. Across the 29 presidential elections Arizona has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (18 times). The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.
