In 1928, Arizona awarded its 3 electoral votes to Smith of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Herbert Hoover (Republican) won nationally, while Arizona had backed a different ticket.

Arizona stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1912. It stood apart from its neighbors: California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico went the other way that year.
