1928
What happened in Arizona, 1928
In 1928, Arizona awarded its 3 electoral votes to Smith of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Herbert Hoover (Republican) won nationally, while Arizona had backed a different ticket.
Arizona stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1912. It stood apart from its neighbors: California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico went the other way that year. Over its 29 recorded presidential cycles, Arizona has backed the Republican party more than any other — 18 times in all. The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.
Nationally, Herbert Hoover finished with 444 of the 531 electoral votes to Al Smith's 87. Herbert Hoover led the national popular vote with 58.21% of the ballots cast.
