Georgia in 1920

The 1920 contest saw Georgia line up behind Cox, delivering 14 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Warren G. Harding (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Georgia among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 14th consecutive election in which Georgia backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1868. The region divided — Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina joined Georgia for the Democratic ticket, while Tennessee and North Carolina did not. Across the 59 presidential elections Georgia has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (34 times). The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.

In the national count, Warren G. Harding took 404 of the 531 electoral votes, against James M. Cox's 127. Warren G. Harding led the national popular vote with 60.32% of the ballots cast.
