Georgia backed Roosevelt (Democratic) in the 1940 presidential election, casting 12 electoral votes for the ticket. Georgia ended up on the winning side — Franklin D. Roosevelt captured the White House that year.

It marked the 19th consecutive election in which Georgia backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1868. Georgia did not move alone — neighboring Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina broke the same way in 1940.
