Georgia backed Wilson (Democratic) in the 1916 presidential election, casting 14 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Georgia with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Georgia was part of his column.

Georgia stayed in the Democratic column for the 13th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1868. Georgia did not move alone — neighboring Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina broke the same way in 1916. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Georgia has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 34 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 277 of the 531 electoral votes to Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
