1916
Reading the 1916 result in New Jersey
New Jersey backed Wilson (Democratic) in the 1916 presidential election, casting 14 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed New Jersey with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and New Jersey was part of his column.
New Jersey stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1912. It stood apart from its neighbors: New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware went the other way that year. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New Jersey has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 31 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.
Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 277 of the 531 electoral votes to Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
