What happened in New Jersey, 1912

In 1912, New Jersey awarded its 14 electoral votes to Wilson of the Democratic party. That placed New Jersey with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and New Jersey was part of his column.

The result flipped New Jersey away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 4 cycles. The region divided — New York and Delaware joined New Jersey for the Democratic ticket, while Pennsylvania did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New Jersey has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 31 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 435 of the 531 electoral votes to Theodore Roosevelt's 88. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 41.84% of the ballots cast.
