In 1916, Maryland awarded its 8 electoral votes to Wilson of the Democratic party. Maryland ended up on the winning side — Woodrow Wilson captured the White House that year.

It marked the 5th consecutive election in which Maryland backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1900. The region divided — Virginia joined Maryland for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware did not.
