Maryland in 1900

The 1900 contest saw Maryland line up behind Bryan, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: William McKinley (Republican) won nationally, while Maryland had backed a different ticket.

The result flipped Maryland away from the Republican it had supported in 1896. The region divided — Virginia joined Maryland for the Democratic ticket, while West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Maryland has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 34 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, William McKinley finished with 292 of the 447 electoral votes to William Jennings Bryan's 155. William McKinley led the national popular vote with 51.64% of the ballots cast.
