What happened in Kentucky, 1912

In 1912, Kentucky awarded its 13 electoral votes to Wilson of the Democratic party. That placed Kentucky with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Kentucky was part of his column.

Kentucky stayed in the Democratic column for the 13th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1864. Kentucky did not move alone — neighboring Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, and Illinois broke the same way in 1912. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Kentucky has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 435 of the 531 electoral votes to Theodore Roosevelt's 88. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 41.84% of the ballots cast.
