It marked the 11th consecutive election in which Alabama backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1876. Alabama did not move alone — neighboring Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida broke the same way in 1916. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

In the national count, Woodrow Wilson took 277 of the 531 electoral votes, against Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
