In 1896, Alabama awarded its 11 electoral votes to Bryan of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: William McKinley (Republican) won nationally, while Alabama had backed a different ticket.

Alabama stayed in the Democratic column for the 6th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1876. Alabama did not move alone — neighboring Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida broke the same way in 1896. Over its 51 recorded presidential cycles, Alabama has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, William McKinley finished with 271 of the 447 electoral votes to William Jennings Bryan's 176. William McKinley led the national popular vote with 51.02% of the ballots cast.
