1928
Alabama in 1928
The 1928 contest saw Alabama line up behind Hoover, delivering 12 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Alabama with the eventual winner: Herbert Hoover went on to take the presidency, and Alabama was part of his column.
The result flipped Alabama away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 13 cycles. The region divided — Tennessee and Florida joined Alabama for the Republican ticket, while Mississippi and Georgia did not. Over its 51 recorded presidential cycles, Alabama has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.
Nationally, Herbert Hoover finished with 444 of the 531 electoral votes to Al Smith's 87. Herbert Hoover led the national popular vote with 58.21% of the ballots cast.
