Iowa in 1912

The 1912 contest saw Iowa line up behind Wilson, delivering 13 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Iowa with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Iowa was part of his column.

The result flipped Iowa away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 14 cycles. The region divided — Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota joined Iowa for the Democratic ticket, while Minnesota did not. Over its 47 recorded presidential cycles, Iowa has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 435 of the 531 electoral votes to Theodore Roosevelt's 88. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 41.84% of the ballots cast.
