1872
Reading the 1872 result in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania backed Grant (Republican) in the 1872 presidential election, casting 29 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed Pennsylvania with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and Pennsylvania was part of his column.
Pennsylvania stayed in the Republican column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1860. The region divided — Ohio and New York joined Pennsylvania for the Republican ticket, while West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Pennsylvania has backed the Republican party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.
Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 286 of the 352 electoral votes to Thomas A. Hendricks's 42. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 55.58% of the ballots cast.
