In 1856, Pennsylvania awarded its 27 electoral votes to Buchanan of the Democratic party. That placed Pennsylvania with the eventual winner: James Buchanan went on to take the presidency, and Pennsylvania was part of his column.

Pennsylvania stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1852. The region divided — New Jersey joined Pennsylvania for the Democratic ticket, while Ohio, Maryland, Delaware, and New York did not.
