In 2024, Iowa awarded its 6 electoral votes to Trump of the Republican party. Iowa ended up on the winning side — Donald Trump captured the White House that year.
It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Iowa backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 2016. The region divided — Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota joined Iowa for the Republican ticket, while Minnesota and Illinois did not. Across the 47 presidential elections Iowa has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (32 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
In the national count, Donald Trump took 312 of the 538 electoral votes, against Kamala Harris's 226. Donald Trump led the national popular vote with 49.8% of the ballots cast.
